Jan Ullrich

Germany
I saw Jan Ullrich win the 1993 World Amateur title in Oslo, Norway, and watched the growth of his career with great enthusiasm, enthralled by the colossus strength of this ginger-haired German. Sadly, after three brilliant years in the 1996-97-98 Tours de France, Ullrich became something of a disappointment to his fans and fellow competitors, even though he has stubbornly raced himself to either a World or Olympic title these past three years. Soundly beaten by Lance Armstrong in the last two editions of the Tour, Ullrich is determined to come good in the 2002 Tour - but can he ever
be as good as he once was
